How to Eat for Energy

All right, you say. Eating for energy sounds like a great idea. After all, you wake up and you are still too tired; you find yourself nearly drifting off to sleep in the afternoon; and by bedtime every night, you are exhausted. Yes, you say, bring on the energy foods... but there’s a problem. You have no idea what to eat for energy. You don’t want to do the research and go searching for solutions. You want a quick fix.

You’ve got it. Here is a one-day meal plan that will have you feeling more energetic than you have in years.

Breakfast: Put down the box of sugary cereal, and put away the coffee grounds for this morning. You are going to have a green smoothie. Simply grab a handful of spinach or any other leafy green, and toss it into the juicer. Add in a sliced and cored apple and pear, and a peeled orange. Juice it, and drink it immediately. That fresh taste is going to help to wake you up in place of your usual caffeine jolt, and the natural sugars in the fruit will give you the energy you need to make it through the morning.

Lunch: Everyone else in the office is heading out for a hamburger at the local fast food joint. By the time they drive over, and wait in that long drive-through line, you will have already tucked into that great salad that you brought from home. With a simple garlic-infused oil and vinegar dressing that you made yourself, your salad of spinach, red peppers, tomatoes, onions and walnuts is going to fill you up just as well as that greasy burger would have but the difference will be hugely apparent at the afternoon meeting, when the burger crowd is fighting to stay awake and struggling to digest their greasy lunch, and you are sitting upright and bushy-tailed, without a bit of the usual tiredness.

Snack: Simply, grab a handful of almonds and an apple instead of the couple of cookies you usually nibble on. It will take fewer nuts than you might figure to combat any hunger you are feeling, and the sugars in the apple will give you enough power to get through the rest of the day.

Dinner: Oh, you are feeling like some Italian tonight, but you really don’t feel like packing your stomach with starchy noodles? Make yourself raw zucchini pasta instead. It might sound and look complex, but it really is not. Simple take your vegetable peeler to a zucchini, and peel off some spaghetti-like strands. Serve a heaping mound of these peelings with some raw tomato sauce and garlic, and you will be surprised at how alert you will feel after dinner, for once.

Dessert: Again, simplicity is the key here. Get yourself a bowl of mixed fruit instead of the platter of ice cream. The fruit will keep you alert enough, without keeping you awake well into the night, and the lack of dairy might just aid in your digestion.
