If you are looking for ways to increase the amount of energy you have, you have probably considered the type of fuel that you put into your system, and the impact is has on your energy levels. Many of us use stimulants like caffeine, or processed sugars in order to give ourselves a short but measurable increase in power and alertness; however, these effects are often incredibly short in duration, and the crash that comes afterward can leave you at a lower point of power than when you began.
If you really want to achieve the highest levels of energy for your body, you need to stop with the stop-gap solutions, and give your systems a longer-lasting, more sustainable type of fuel to burn. One of the best fuels for this is raw foods. Of course, not all raw foods are created equal; just like any other diet plan, there are foods that can be eaten raw that will not do much for your energy levels. However, there are an abundance of raw foods that can give you much more of a boost than any chocolate bar could ever hope for.
Blueberries are one of nature’s most amazing foods, and if you’re looking for energy from what you eat, you cannot go wrong with a handful of these tiny round miracles. Not only are they incredibly easy to prepare as a snack – just rinse and eat – they are filled with all sorts of wonderful vitamins and nutrients for your body, including but not limited to huge reserves of manganese to help with detoxification; Vitamin B6 to help metabolize amino acids in the body; and loads of good fibre. Recent studies have also shown that consuming blueberries can help with continued mental sharpness as we age, keep heart disease at bay, and can help to ward off certain cancers.
Almonds are another great snack food that can give you more energy. Especially for those of us who are constantly on the run, having a handy and portable food choice is important, as healthy options are often crowded out in favor of packaged candies and syrupy sodas disguised as energy foods. Almonds are filled with good dietary fibre and essential fats and oils to keep your body operating at peak performance levels. The fats in these nuts are great for quick energy.
Bananas are often given out at marathons, along with water and those horrid little packets of gels. There are a number of reasons why bananas are so popular among athletes. The simple sugars in a banana are quickly absorbed by your body, giving you a quick burst of energy; their naturally soft texture means they pass quickly through your digestive tract; and the potassium they contain helps to combat the build-up of lactic acid in your muscles, and helps athletes to recover after strenuous workouts. If you don’t want to carry a soft and easily bruised banana with you, they can be sliced and dehydrated for a more portable snack.
